The Dangers of Registering to Vote August 18, 2009 - Everyone at some point in their life has been given the sage advice to never sign a document before first reading and understanding what it is they are signing. However in practice we do not always follow this advice, often to our detriment. In many states as a matter of course, it is not uncommon to be provided a voter registration application to complete when applying for a driver's license. Many lawful permanent residents, in particular, unknowingly complete this application believing that it is part of the driver's license application process or even that they are entitled to vote. This is a grave error that can affect their status, their ability to naturalize and subject them to criminal prosecution and removal. In most cases lawful permanent residents and non-citizens in general do not qualify to vote. To participate in a federal election you must be a citizen of the United States and at least 18 years of age or older. The same holds true in most state elections. Check your state's law on voter qualifications as there may be exceptions. Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 June 26, 2009 - U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced that the current Employment Eligibility Verification form I-9 will remain valid through June 30, 2009 pending its update. The current form I-9 has a revision date of February 2, 2009. This date can be found in the bottom right-hand corner the form. The form itself can be found on the USCIS website here.
